The Way Home

At this point in our RV odyssey we were done with a lot of the excitement. Now we were headed back to Oklahoma.

As a covid precaution we don't eat food that other people have cooked. We also don't enter buildings. Despite our holy rules we didn't want to pass up an opportunity to have a snack from the local chain Braum's. I thought it was a perfect move because at Braum's in addition to the fast food stuff they also have packaged food. So I walked up to the window and asked for a pint of ice cream. The drive through worker was mind blown and refused to go get me some damn ice cream from the shelf, and I refused to buy ice cream they prepared, so I walked away empty handed.

Some hilarious signs punctured the monotony of the drive.

Hooker, OK was a fantastic source of amusement.

I bet a lot of girls did pick up their Hooker t shirts here and then wore them proudly over at Hooker High School.

We explored the dusty little down of Buffalo, Oklahoma.

It seems as though the poppers became the poppees when Dollar General came to town.

Happy Fall Ya'll

I took a few pictures of our palace the next morning.

We never could get an actual fully hot shower out of this thing.

Sledding the Great Sand Dunes

Another day in paradise, driving around my own outhouse.

A McDonald's with only one arch is blasphemy as far as I'm concerned. I've got the culture shock for real now.

There was a brief intermission filled with bighorn sheep.

We spotted a deer casually crossing the road after a brief stop in Saguache, Colorado to stretch our legs.

There was a bit of drama surrounding our visit to Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve. We wanted to rent sleds but there weren't a lot of options... long story short we ended up having to drive way out of our way and pay way too much for a couple of pieces of wood with handles on them. It was worth it but still a little annoying.

Lydia with her hard won sled.

"Welcome to the tallest dunes in North America! Shaped and balanced by the forces of wind and water, these huge dunes are a wonderland of textures, shadows, habitats, and experiences."

People were getting into the Christmas spirit.

Well I didn't know a damn thing about sand sledding, but they gave us some wax at the rental place so we waxed up our boards. Cowabunga!

I don't like to brag but dunes and I have come to an understanding while sandboarding in the deserts of Dubai so it was not really a surprise to anyone when I skidded down the slopes so fast that some of the sand turned into glass.

Lydia got sand in her tears. Sore losing is unbecoming of a lady. Sad!

It took so much work to walk up the dunes that we only went down once, turned around, went back to the car, and drove all the way back to the rental place to return the boards. Investment accomplished.

In summary I highly recommend sledding Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve to anyone who might enjoy discovering small bits of national park in their body's crevices for days after their visit.

We spent the night in Walsenburg, CO, just dreaming about the luxurious color tvs flaunted by the nearby Anchor Motel. Must be nice.
