Yes, it's true. After 3 or 4 previous visits to St. Louis' Mardi Gras, I was finally able to see the Mardi Gras parade.
Every year Mardi Gras for me happened in Soulard, Mardi Gras ground zero. The party was intense and the next day's aftermath was a scene from The Walking Dead: garbage everywhere, broken temporary fencing, and stumbling, slow moving hangover sufferers.
Well the crowds were so intense that getting anywhere near the parade was uncomfortable. Well it turns out that parade I tried to interact with in Soulard starts all the way next to Busch Stadium over a mile away. So we simply took the metro to the stadium and took a short walk to the parade route. There was a ton of room to see the parade and to claim its treasures.
We arrived a little before the parade began, so we went straight to the task of making friends with the parade marshals and bribing them with beers. He did a pretty solid job of grabbing goodies for us and passing them off.
Luckily he turned out to be quite the little moocher. I tried fruitlessly to get one of those jackets. At the time I thought they were hilarious because they had a porta-potty company advertisement on the back. "R & R Sanitation: We Want Your Stinking Business".
Toasted ravioli people.
The folding chair brigade.
We ended up doing pretty well concerning plastic treasures. Underneath it all I have on a red polka dot bow tie that I caught as well.
