A Drive to Kilkenny

We got our rental car which was a new twist to our trip. It took a bit to get used to driving on the left, but for the most part things went smoothly.

This was the extent of the driver's ed we received.

Our first stop was Glendalough in County Wicklow.

The remains of a monastic city were all around, as well as a massive ancient graveyard.

St. Kevin's Church

The Round Tower. I think the monks retreated to this tower when under threat. You can see the door is about a story off the ground, and the ladder up would be retracted to discourage unwanted visitors.

I bought one of those cool flat Irishy hats that I wore the rest of the day. Tom got a similar one.

We stopped for the night in Kilkenny.

It was a bit nippy out so I ordered a hot whiskey with my dinner. It's kind of like a hot tea with whiskey instead of tea.

Today is St. Stephen's Day, which from the commercials seems to be a big shopping day. There were several little kids that would try to sneak into the pub and ask people for money, only to be shooed away by the staff. I guess this is a St. Stephen's Day thing.
